Lick It Up
by: Jo Ann Breaux
Charm School
When sweltering becomes part of the regularly schedule forecast, one tends to navigate towards cooler eats. Growing up in the swamplands of Louisiana, ice cream became not just a heavenly treat, but also a way for us to feel cool in the oppressive humidity. Ice cream became part of my growing up as soon as I dipped my spoon in an ice cream sundae my dad gave me from Stark’s, the restaurant he managed. The combo of whipped cream, chocolate syrup, nuts and the cherry on top were the most magical thing I’d ever eaten, and I quickly requested that weekends and after baseball games be reserved for an ice cream outing.
What I love about ice cream is its versatility. Sure, you can incorporate pretty much any ingredient base, from fruit to truffle, but even the way it is served can be unique. Whether cone or slab of marble, an ice cream serving can fit any palate and you’d be hard pressed to find someone who is adverse to the cold, creamy dessert.
RVA is no stranger to culinary delights, and ice cream is no exception. We sized up our top five to celebrate #NationalIceCreamMonth. Comment below and tell us your local faves.
Naomi and Abby Breaux, Hanging out back at Gelati Celesti
Gelati Celesti / Scott’s Addition
They have the perfect amount of flavors, including specials and seasonal favorites. They are also a perfect pitstop on the way home from a Squirrel’s game or on a lazy Sundae afternoon. They even have local flavors such as Blanchard’s Coffee’s Dark is Dark.
Ruby Scoops / Brookland Park
This award winning neighborhood favorite was a welcomed addition to Northside. Ruby not only has traditional flavors, but you can find some unique ones as well, like Black Sesame or Sweet Potato. There’s also rotating Vegan options and an array of sorbets. Always friendly, always delicious, and never too sweet.
Charm School Study Hall / Forest Hill
Grab and go soft serve ice cream worth the wait. Charm School is known for being the first in Vegan flavors, but they do delve into traditional flavors as well. If you want straight forward, honest ice cream, they are your spot. A nice place to walk up and enjoy your treat outdoors.
Spotty Dog / Union Hill
Looking for some decadence in your scooped dreams? Look no further, one of Union Hill’s newest additions doesn’t disappoint in indulgent creamery. This Kickstarter creates crafted ice cream New England Style and do it well in their contemporary style parlor.
Scoop / The Fan
We love that you can join the Pint Club at Scoops. As soon as you walk into the door, you are hit with the warmest aroma. Home of the RVA macaron, Scoop doesn’t disappoint when it comes to handcrafted flavor. Their ice cream cakes are the best and they are consistently creating new flavors. A must have when ambling around the Fan.
Nightingale Signature Rose Champagne
Honorable Mention: Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches
Sorry, we had to mention our favorite RVA Belgian, Xavier Meers and his wife Hannah Pollack for their Ice Cream Sandwiches. They are simply the best at combining simple ingredients between the crunch of a delicious cookie. What we love most about Nightingale is the passion and the fact that you can find them all over the city!
